"No plan of attack ever survives first contact with the enemy."
"Are you alright?" Ditzy managed to ask, feeling rather disjointed. Just her luck she'd run into someone headlong. Slowly she rolled over, trying to scoot to one side and get some weight off her wing.
"Oh! Sorry, sorry!!" Ditzy answered quickly, shifting herself further until she was on her knees. Her head came up to look at the other pony, and suddenly the apologies died on her lips.
"You really should watch where you are going." Came the irritated answer.
"C'mon Twilight, it's not like she did it on purpose." Spike noted from the side.
"I… I'm sorry." Ditzy replied, almost on automatic, "I have a problem with depth perception sometimes and I got caught in a bad crosswind."
"I'll live. Are you hurt?" Twilight Sparkle asked, her expression showing more a resignation to "tolerate" her rather then actual forgiveness. Rather then answer, Ditzy stood up and flicked her wings slightly, checking herself after yet another crash, then forced herself to laugh.
"Any crash you can walk away from." Ditzy offered with a strained smile, "You're new in town aren't you? I'm the town's mail carrier, Ditzy Hoov… er Doo. Ditzy Doo." She self corrected.
"Well, you seem to be taking it in stride." The lavender unicorn noted as Ditzy moved to help her up.
"You sure? It looks like it knocked her eyes out of alignment." Spike noted with a barely contained laugh. Twilight at least made a show of hissing at Spike to be quiet.
"It's alright. " Ditzy waved it off with a hoof, "It's a medical problem. The doctors weren't able to fix it, so it sometimes gives me problems. But usually I'm running into THINGS, not other ponies."
"Well, so long as you're okay."
"Let me make it up to you." She noted with a wide smile, "I can at least welcome you to Ponyville properly. Maybe treat you to a late lunch?"
"No, that's quite alright…" Twilight began.
"Well, we DO have to check on the food preparation." Spike reminded Twilight.
"Who do we have to see about that?"
"We have a few choices there it seems, it's being done by three different groups here. Sweet Apple Acres, Sugarcube Corner, and The Carrot Patch." Spike announced.
"Let's try the carrot one, I don't feel much like apples after that dream." Twilight groaned, cradling her stomach.
"I can show you where that is." Ditzy offered with a smile. That was at least close to the orchards, and maybe with luck things could get back on track. But she couldn't help but wonder at the decision, didn't Twilight WANT to meet her friends from last time?
"Hey, that's what friends are for, right?" Ditzy offered, noticing the slightly pained expression from the lavender unicorn before they started heading towards the edge of town. Silently she wondered what made her choose that turn of phrase.
It wasn't an overly long trip to reach the near edge of the orchard, and the wonderful smells emanating from Sweet Apple Acres. Ditzy made a show of taking a good long sniff of the smells, flitting her wings in a comical manner. Spike seemed to follow suit, but apparently wasn't exactly enamored by the smell. Twilight herself seemed immune.
"You sure you don't want to head to the orchard? I'm sure Applejack would welcome you with open arms." Ditzy tried tentatively.
"Applejack?" Twilight's head swiveled up so fast Spike almost fell off the filly.
"Hey! Watch it!!" the baby dragon complained.
"Sorry Spike. Maybe Ditzy is right, maybe we should check out Sweet Apple Acres…." Twilight agreed.
"You really don't want to do that." A new voice inserted into the conversation, making the trio turn to look. Ditzy was the only one who recognized her light yellow pelt with bright orange mane in a mass of unruly curls.
"Hey there Carrot Top." Ditzy called , cringing inwardly. So close...
"Why? Is something wrong down there?" Twilight asked apprehensively as Carrot Top trotted up to them.
"'Cause the entire Apple clan is in town. One of the biggest families I've ever known in these parts. You went down there, we might not see you again until after the Celebration as long over." Carrot offered.
"Well, I do need to check on the food for the celebration…" Twilight managed weakly.
"OH! I can do that." Carrot offered with a proud smile, "I'm the sole proprietor of The Carrot Patch. I had to lobby pretty hard to get my carrots into the Celebration this year."
"Well… Okay. Mind as well check it out while we're here." Twilight offered with a smile. Ditzy sighed, she'd almost gotten the unicorn to meet Applejack and maybe straighten this mess out. But with Twilight seemingly unconvinced that what happened before was more then just a dream, she was making no effort to repeat what happened.
"You okay Ditzy?" The small dragon asked and Ditzy blinked as she looked at the small dragon.
"Sure, everything's fine." She answered, offering her biggest phony smile as she moved to follow Twilight and Carrot Top.
